Gush Katif, as opposed to Northern Shomron was a relatively rural, geographically isolated region. While there were professionals living in the area who worked in more central locations such as Ashkelon, Ashdod, Beer Sheva, and Sderot, 85% of the population in Gush Katif worked in Gush Katif. Those who earned their livelihoods in the Gush itself were immediately unemployed after the Disengagement.
