Where are they now?
The majority of the families of Gush Katif are living in temporary communities throughout Israel. Each of the 19 communties has created a different plan for permanent relocation.
Here is a detailed status report (April 2011) published by the Friends of Gush Katif, or the Vaad HaMityashvim, as it is known in Hebrew, that goes into the areas of employment, housing, legislation and agriculture is attached. It is clear from this report that after more than 2000 days - almost 6 years – since the destruction of Gush Katif:
- A mere 16% of the families continuing in the community framework of Gush Katif have completed building and moved to a permanent home. The majority of families are still living in inadequate temporary housing.
- A mere 28% of growers have resumed farming.
- A full 20% of former Gush Katif residents suffer from unemployment.
